Biography:
Dr. Mohamed Othman is an Associate Professor of Computer Science in the Dept of Communication Technology and Network, Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), since 2001. In April 2008, he was appointed as a deputy director of InfoComm Development Centre (iDEC) at the same university. He received his PhD in Computer Science from the Department of Industrial Computing, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia with distinction (Best PhD Thesis in 2000 awarded by Sime Darby Malaysia and Malaysian Mathematical Science Society) in 1999. During his PhD study, he has contributed and published twelve journal papers in which five were in impact factor journals and the others were in cited and indexed journals. Since 1989, in total, he had published 110 journal papers and more than 300 conference papers, both at national and international levels. He has expertise in several areas of computer science such as parallel and distributed algorithms, grid computing, high-speed computer network and scientific computing.

Among the famous places, he visited include in 2001, the Japanese Supercomputer Research Centre in Yokohama, Japan known as the Earth Simulator where in that particular year, it is ranked as the number one supercomputer in the world ranking and now it is at number 30 (Release Nov. 2007). Presented his paper at the House of Scientist, Akademgorodok, Novosibrisk, Russia and visited the Russian Academy of Science (Siberian Branch) in the same year. In 2005, he presented his paper at the Vietnamese Academy of Science, Hanoi, Vietnam. In 2007, he presented his paper at International Conference on Computational Science 2007, Beijing, China and visited the Peking University and Chinese Academy of Science.

He received “An Excellent Researcher” and “An Excellent Researcher 2006 for his great contribution in publication” awards from the Institute of Mathematical Research (INSPEM), UPM in 2003 and 2006 respectively. In 2007, he received “An Excellent Researcher for his great contribution in publication” award from Research Management Centre, UPM. Since 2002, he has received a total of 7 gold, 13 silver and 5 bronze medal awards in the UPM Invention, Research and Innovation Exhibition. In 2005, he received a gold and a silver medal awards in the IPTA Research Exhibition, and a bronze medal award in the Malaysian Technology Exhibition 2007.

He is a member of the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) Computer Society (Malaysian Section), the Institute of Electronics, Information and Communication Engineers (IEICE) of Japan, Malaysian National Computer Confederation and life membership for Malaysian Mathematical Society. He is also a member of the International Association of Engineers (IAENG) and the World Internet Society (ISOC).

He is also an associate researcher and program coordinator in the areas of High Performance Computing (HPC), Computer Networks and Scientific Computing at the Laboratory of Computational Science and Informatics, INSPEM, UPM.
